OUR IMPACT

Our Philosophy

A new era of hyper-local, immersive accommodation

Set in the heart of the World Heritage listed Daintree Rainforest, Daintree Ecolodge is a boutique retreat where treetop bayans, birdsong and flowing creeks invite you to slow down.

Guided by Eastern Kuku Yalanji culture and grounded in conservation, each stay creates a meaningful connection between rainforest, community and purpose. As a certified B Corp, the lodge weaves a commitment to local culture, nature and social impact into every detail, from celebrating resident artists to protecting native species.

Through our partnership with Rainforest Rescue, the lodge supports the restoration of previously cleared Daintree Lowland Rainforest and the growth of vital native plant nurseries. Thoughtfully designed communal spaces and guest experiences reflect a deep connection to place, welcoming you to Stay Intrepid.

Energy & Water Use

  • Renewable energy: Daintree Ecolodge operates on 100 per cent renewable energy through a combination of onsite solar panels and purchased GreenPower.
  • Lower Impact lighting: Energy-efficient LED lighting is used throughout the Ecolodge.
  • Smart technology: We’re in the process of trialling a new technology system that adjusts air conditioning and energy use based on room occupancy.
  • Water treatment: We have a new bio-cycle septic tank and wastewater treatment plant that allows wastewater to be filtered and recycled for irrigation and watering.
  • Linen reuse: We encourage guests and staff to reduce unnecessary washing of towels and bedding, helping lower both energy and water use.

Waste Management & Recycling

  • No single-use plastics: We have completely eradicated single-use plastics from all Ecolodge guest areas, including the rooms and restaurant. In the kitchen, we no longer use single-use plastics and are working with suppliers to reduce the delivery of items wrapped in plastic. Our effort to influence supplier practices has already resulted in positive, new approaches to food delivery and is having long term environmental benefits.
  • Reusable amenities: Single-use amenities have been removed from rooms and instead we use refillable toiletry dispensers and washable slippers made from recyclable materials.
  • Reusable drink containers: Guests are provided with complimentary reusable drink bottles to reduce waste.
  • No plastic straws: We support the anti-straw movement to help clean up our oceans. Paper straws are available upon request.
  • Recycling: Staff are trained in correct sorting and recycling practices, ensuring that all materials that can be reused or recycled are handled properly. We utilise the local Containers for Change scheme to ensure our cans and bottles are recycled appropriately and the funds returned go directly to our Intrepid Foundation Partner Rainforest Rescue. We’re now also encouraging others to adopt the recycling scheme and improve their local recycling programs.
  • Food waste: We divert food waste from landfill through on‑site composting and careful menu planning to minimise excess.

Carbon Management Program

  • The Daintree Ecolodge follows Intrepid Travel’s Global Climate Action Plan, including a commitment to achieve a 21 per cent absolute reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, from a 2024 base year.
  • Daintree Ecolodge’s greenhouse gas emissions have been measured and independently assured in line with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard.
  • Intrepid’s Climate Data and Methodology reports can be viewed here in full. Disclosures from 2025 onwards have been prepared in accordance with the Australian Sustainability Reporting Standard AASB S2 – Climate‑Related Disclosures and the Corporations Act 2001.

Nature Protection

We aim not only to minimise our footprint, but also to help restore and protect the local environment.

  • Planting trees: Our partnership with Rainforest Rescue allows us to assist in the reforestation of areas of the Daintree Rainforest that have been impacted by human development.
  • Wildlife: We protect onsite wildlife by maintaining natural habitat and educating guests about native species
  • Responsible products: We choose cleaning products that are gentler on the environment.
  • Supporting the community: We are a supporter of the local economy, working with local suppliers on eco-friendly activities offered to our guests.
  • Fresh produce: Our herb and vegetable gardens supply fresh ingredients for meals prepared onsite.

Community Engagement & Philanthropy

  • Local produce: We work with suppliers in the Tropical North Queensland and Far North Queensland regions to source local, organic, free range, fair trade, produce and products for our lodge. Reducing transport impacts and supporting local growers.
  • Supporting artisans: We feature and sell works by Kuku Yalanji artists, ensuring that part of every sale returns directly to the Kuku Yalanji people. We have also developed branded amenities using products from MadeWild, a local First Nation-owned business.
  • First Nations consultation: Guided by Intrepid Travel’s Stretch Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), we are committed to meaningful, lasting progress across three key focus areas: increasing employment opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people; growing our procurement from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-owned businesses; and elevating truth‑telling through thoughtful communication with our guests, staff and the wider industry.
  • Local economy: We prioritise hiring local staff, partnering with regional operators for guest activities and contributing to community initiatives through donations and staff involvement.

Respecting Human Rights

We follow international human rights principles, including the UN Guiding Principles on Business & Human Rights and the International Labour Organization’s core standards.
